The response of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, to progressive hypoxia: fish swimming speed and physiological stress

چکیده

Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, were exposed to a progressive stepwise decline in water oxygen pressure ð19:9; 13:2; 10:5; 8:4; 6:2 and 4:3 kPa PO2Þ: Fish swimming speed and indicators of primary and secondary stress (e.g. blood cortisol and lactate) were measured to assess whether a severe shift in physiological homeostasis (i.e. stress) preceded any change in behaviour or vice versa. Swimming speed increased by 18% when PO2 was reduced rapidly from 19.9 kPa to 13.2 kPa and was interpreted as an initial avoidance response. However, swimming speed was reduced by 21% at a moderate level of steady PO2 (8.4 kPa) and continued to drop by 41% under progressively deep hypoxia (4.3 kPa). Elevations in plasma cortisol and blood lactate indicated major physiological stress but only at 4.3 kPa, which corresponds to the critical oxygen tension of this species. We propose that the drop in speed during hypoxia aids to offset major stress and is adaptive for the survival of cod in extensive areas of low oxygen. Abbreviations PO2 : Partial pressure of oxygen

The behavioural and physiological response of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. to short-term acute hypoxia

The average rate of swimming speed and the physiological status or stress of individual Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was monitored in response to short-term acute (STA) hypoxia (i.e. partial pressure of oxygen, PO2 , reduced from 20 9 to 4 3 kPa within 1 h at 10° C). The STA hypoxic response of Atlantic cod was associated with a large primary increase (þ29%) and a large secondary decrease ( 54%) i...

Spontaneous Swimming Activity of Atlantic Cod Gadus Morhua Exposed to Graded Hypoxia at Three Temperatures

The spontaneous swimming activity of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was investigated at graded levels of hypoxia at three temperatures (5, 10 and 15 °C) by using a computerized system monitoring animal activity. The fish were tested individually, and swimming distance was used as a measure of activity. No significant effect of temperature on swimming distance in normoxic water was found. At all ...

Effect of acute and chronic hypoxia on the swimming performance, metabolic capacity and cardiac function of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Low water oxygen content (hypoxia) is a common feature of many freshwater and marine environments. However, we have a poor understanding of the degree to which diminished cardiac function contributes to the reduction in fish swimming performance concomitant with acute exposure to hypoxia, or how fish cardiorespiratory physiology is altered by, or adapts to, chronic hypoxia. Thus, we acclimated ...

The responses of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) to ultrasound-emitting predators: stress, behavioural changes or debilitation?

A previous study has reported that Atlantic cod can be conditioned to detect ultrasonic sound pulses of high intensity. This capability has been proposed as a mean for detection and avoidance of echolocating toothed whales that emit intense ultrasonic clicks. In this study, we use acoustic playbacks to test the hypotheses that unconditioned cod can detect and respond to intense ultrasound from ...

Excess post-hypoxic oxygen consumption in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua.

Atlantic cod Gadus morhua experienced oxygen deficit ( D O 2 ) when exposed to oxygen levels below their critical level (c. 73% of pcrit ) and subsequent excess post-hypoxic oxygen consumption (CEPHO ) upon return to normoxic conditions, indicative of an oxygen debt. The mean ± s.e. CEPHO : D O 2 was 6·9 ± 1·5, suggesting that resorting to anaerobic energy production in severe hypoxia is energe...
